NCCU Women’s Basketball Looks to Cage the Wildcats for a first-series win

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University hope to obtain their first-series win in their second matchup of the season against the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Feb. 6 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

In their initial meeting this season on Monday, Jan. 9 the mighty maroon outscored the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman 31-20 in the second-half of play and hit a 15-5 run in the half, nonetheless NCCU could not outlast B-CU as the night concluded with 64-54 Bethune-Cookman victory.

Chasidy Williams, who finished the night with team-high 25 points, pulled down six rebounds and stole six Lady Wildcat possessions.  NCCU freshman Montreshia Perry, who was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe and 2-of-4 from the long range, achieved her first double-figure outing as a Lady Eagle with 12 points.  Sophomore Tenika Neely circulated four assists, as fellow classmate Tiffany Gary grabbed six boards.

Since that contest, NCCU has declined to 2-20 on the season and 0-9 in conference play, while Bethune-Cookman has gone on to attain a 6-15 overall record and 3-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The maroon and gray enters Moore Gymnasium after a 102-66 loss to Florida A&M on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Al Lawson Center on the FAMU campus. In the second series meeting of the season, junior Chasidy Williams led the mighty maroon with a team-high 17 points, as freshman Kabrina Truesdale dropped 14 points and senior Blaire Houston netted 10 points in the loss.  Williams intercepted four Lady Rattlers passes and tallied the only maroon and gray block, while Truesdale collected two assists.

The maroon and gray finished the hardwood matchup at 46 percent from the field on 25-of-54 shooting, 4-of-9 from behind the arc, and 55 percent from the charity stripe, 12-of-22.

On the season, NCCU is 36 percent from the field on 411-of-1131 shooting, 60-of-208 from behind the arc, and 58 percent from the charity stripe, 224-of-385.  Williams guides NCCU with 314 points, 150 rebounds, 53 steals and 15 blocks, while Truesdale leads in assists with 37.

After dropping an overtime 63-60 decision to North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Feb. 4, the Lady Wildcats welcome the maroon and gray to the Florida-based gym.

B-CU was 45 percent from the field on 24-of-53, 4-of-13 from the long range, and 81 percent from the free-throw line, 13-of-16.  Demetria Frank led the squad with a team-high 19 points, while Jasmine Elum, who attained a double-double in the January meeting, dropped 18 points in the loss.  Sharnese Neal pulled down five rebounds, as Frank circulated three assists and Clenice Roberts stole three possessions.

On the season, Bethune-Cookman is shooting 35 percent from the field on 398-of-1136 shooting, 70-of-280 from the long range and 64 percent from the charity stripe, 255-of-397.  Elum leads with 252 points overall, while Frank has gathered 103 rebounds, 64 assists. 13 blocks and 65 steals.
