NCCU Women’s Basketball Looks to Take the Series Lead on Saturday

www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – North Carolina Central University travels to Savannah, Ga., to take on Savannah State University in the Tiger Arena and gain a one-game series lead over the Lady Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2:00 p.m.

While, NCCU and SSU meet for the second time this season, Saturday marks the 11th meeting between the two teams.  On Saturday, Feb. 11 the mighty maroon defeated the Lady Tigers 50-38 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

In the 12-point Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory, NCCU senior Blaire Houston added five rebounds and three assists to her career-high performance of 19 points, while tallying a season-high 9-of-10 outing from the charity stripe and shooting 2-of-3 from the long range.  Junior Chasidy Williams added 16 points, three steals and four blocks to NCCU’s first conference win, as sophomore Lakisha Evans pulled down 10 rebounds.

Since that contest, NCCU is 3-23 on the season and 1-12 in conference play, while Savannah State is 9-16 on the season and 2-10 in the MEAC.

The Lady Eagles fly south to Georgia following a 45-66 loss to North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Greensboro, N.C.  In the MEAC rivalry, Williams marked her eighth double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Evans tallied 10 points.

The maroon and gray finished the hardwood matchup at 30 percent on 18-of-61 from the field, 2-of-15 from the long range, and 64 percent on a 7-of-13 effort from the charity stripe.

On the season, NCCU is 36 percent from the field on 482-of-1329 shooting, 73-of-253 from behind the arc, and 60 percent from the charity stripe, 277-of-462.  Williams guides NCCU with 379 points, 188 rebounds, 61 steals and 18 blocks, while freshman Kabrina Truesdale leads in assists with 47.

Savannah State welcomes the maroon and gray after a Monday, Feb. 20 43-47 defeat by Bethune-Cookman in Tiger Arena.  Ezinne Kalu led the Lady Tigers with 20 points, as Jasmine Kirkland added 11 points and Alisha Nelson grabbed nine rebounds.

On the season, SSU is shooting 35 percent from the field on 490-of-1406, shooting, 60-of-274 from the long range, and 61 percent from the charity stripe, 280-of-461.  Kalu directs to the offense with 458 points, 65 assists and 74 steals, while Nelson has pulled down 134 rebounds and block 53 shots.
