Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University softball team finished their season opening double header with a pair of loses as they fell 1-12 and 1-6 to Appalachian State University at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
During game one the Lady Eagles struggled putting the ball in play against Mountaineer pitcher Caitlin Wainright, not finding their first base hit until the fourth inning when Mae’Risha Watts singled to short stop giving the Lady Eagles their first base runner of the day.
The Lady Mountaineers proved to be very successful on the offensive side against NCCU. Entering the fifth inning ASU had already accumulated 12 runs, eight of them which were earned runs against Lady Eagle senior pitcher Aurora Baker who received the lose during game one of the series.
During the fifth and final inning of game one sophomore Cember Carmichael started a Lady Eagle rally, earning a base hit down the right field line. Amanda Bullock followed Carmichael’s lead also receiving her first base hit of the day to left field, advancing her teammate to second base. After a sacrifice bunt from Nadia Jefferies and runners now on first and third, the Lady Eagles capitalized on a Lady Mountaineer error from Wainright, scoring Carmichael, and earning their only run during game one.
During game two of the series the Lady Eagles started junior transfer Bianka Molina in the circle. Molina’s efforts in the first inning seemed to a success with a NCCU three up, three down inning, and Molina’s first strike out.
The Lady Eagles held ASU scoreless until the third inning when the Lady Mountaineers earned four hits, scoring three runs on NCCU.
Although the field play had increased in intensity, the Lady Eagles still struggled to find base hits during game two of the series only totaling six compared to the Lady Mountaineers 13.
During the fourth inning Carmichael started yet another rally for her team with a single to left center. Bullock followed with a fielder’s choice to the short stop before a single base hit by Sarah Kaiser to right center, scoring Carmichael and giving the Lady Eagles their first and final run on the day.
The Lady Eagles return to action Tues. Feb. 21 as they take on the Campbell University Camels at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C., with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 2 p.m.
