NCCU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SOUTH CAROLINA STATE, 78-52

Williams provides her fifth 20-point outing and seventh double-double of the season

North Carolina Central University junior Chasidy Williams notched her seventh double-double of the 2011-12 campaign in 78-52 loss to the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University on Monday, Feb. 13, in a McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup.
 
Williams paced the mighty maroon with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Kabrina Truesdale lobbed six assists and gathered two steals.
 
From the moment SCSU’s Tiara Knotts netted a long rang basket at the 19:23 mark, the visiting Lady Bulldogs held the lead and never looked back.  The South Carolina visitors in blue and red extended their lead to as may as 27 points within the first 20 points of play, before ending the first half with a score of 44-18.
 
By the halftime intermission, Williams tallied six points, while sophomore Tenika Neely followed with four points.  Williams also led in boards with seven.
 
While the mighty maroon and the Lady Bulldogs tied in points scored in the second half with 34 points apiece.  SCSU paced to a 34-19 run for a score of 78-39 at the 7:54 mark, before the visiting MEAC squad’s offense went complete silent for the remainder of the night.
 
In final five minutes of competition, NCCU went on an 11-0 run for a final score of 78-52.
 
The Lady Eagles finished the competition shooting 20-of-57 from the field at 35 percent, 3-of-14 from the long range, 60 percent on a 9-of-15 effort from the charity stripe.

Four Lady Bulldogs scored in double-figures with Paris Alston leading the pack with a double-double of 19 points and 13 boards.  Knotts, who finished the night at 4-of-7 from the behind the arc, tallied 18 points, while Tracey Flowers and Tiana Hemphill dropped 12 points apiece.  Cabriel Duren circulated eight assists and forced 5-of-30 NCCU turnovers. ? ?

SCSU was 51 percent from the field on 41-of-80, 8-of-26 from behind the arc, and 80 percent from the free-throw line, 12-of-15.?

NCCU declines to 3-22 overall and 1-11 in MEAC competition, as the South Carolina State advances to 11-11 overall, 6-5 in conference play and 8-2 in the series.? ?

In their second and final meeting of the regular season, the Lady Eagles travel Greensboro, N.C., to N.C. A&T State University for a Saturday, Feb. 18, 2:00 p.m. contest.  NCCU looks to even out this year’s series with a win in Lady Aggie territory.
