Box Score 4 ELON, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - In the two-day Feb. 11-12 Elon Invitational on the campus of Elon University, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University concluded four contests with a 0-4 record while going up against Elon, Liberty and Georgetown in Elon, N.C.
NCCU’s Shamekia Edwards led the Lady Eagles with three runs, three hits and four RBI during the Saturday and Sunday event.
Saturday’s competition opened with a 15-6 loss to the host Lady Phoenix. In the five innings contest, freshman pitcher Bianka Molina opened the two-woman pitching campaign. In her three innings, Molina faced 25 batters, where she allowed 10 hits, 13 runs and permitted six walks on six errors, while throwing two strikeouts.
Senior pitcher Aurora Baker relieved Moreta and held down the circle for one inning. During which time, Baker faced six batters, permitted three hits and two runs with two errors.
Edwards led the maroon and gray offense and defense. From the plate, she tallied two runs, two hits and three RBI on three times at bat. At first base, Edwards notched a game-high four putouts.
Elon’s winning path to a 15-6 victory began in the bottom of the first, as nine Lady Phoenix reached home. Elon outscored the mighty maroon by one run in the remaining three innings, hence enforcing the run rule in the bottom of the fifth.
NCCU concluded the tournament-opening game with six runs, seven hits and three errors.
For their second contest of the day, the Lady Eagles battled the Liberty Flames of Lynchburg, Va., who defeated NCCU 14-5.
NCCU head coach Theresa Stephens, switched the pitching regime by starting Baker on the mound and having Molina come in to relieve her. In five innings of pitching, Baker faced 32 batters, allowed 15 hits and nine runs on six errors, while striking out four of the 32. During Molina’s one inning in the circle, she faced nine batters, permitted five hits and five runs, on two errors.
Edwards was successful at bat once again, with one hit, one run and one RBI, while freshman Tiphani Jackson attained a career-high five putouts and NCCU newcomer Sarah Kaiser finished with four assists from third base.
With 14 runs, 19 hits and no errors, Liberty seized runs in the top of the second, third, fourth and sixth innings, while NCCU attained its five runs in the bottom of the fifth off of five runs, five hits and seven errors.
NCCU continued the two-day event with a Sunday morning matchup with the Hoyas of Georgetown. At the end of six innings, the Hoyas beat the maroon and gray 13-5.
Molina pitched her second complete game of the season for the Lady Eagles. In six innings from the mound, Molina allowed eight hits and 13 runs with seven errors.
Offensively, sophomores Amanda Bullock and Cember Carmichael and junior Nadia Jefferies found success from the plate. On three times at bat, Bullock smacked two hits and swung in two RBI. Carmichael and Jefferies had matching efforts with each student-athlete seizing one run and one hit on three batting efforts.
Edwards reached a season-high six putouts for the NCCU defense.
The mighty maroon opened the contest with a single run in the bottom of the first, but as the offensive effort became erratic, Georgetown’s kicked up its effort and scored in every remaining inning.
For their final contest of the weekend, NCCU faced Elon once again, this time decreasing the runs to eight, for a final 8-2 Elon victory.
Baker pitched her first complete game. Against 32 batters, the senior allowed eight hits and eight runs on four errors and two strikeouts.
NCCU junior Mae’Risha Watts led the offense with one run and one hit on three times at bat, while Kaiser obtained the only RBI of the contest.
Elon achieved their second series win of the season with eight runs and eight hits on three errors, while NCCU drops to 1-5 on the season.
The mighty maroon opens at home with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Norfolk State on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
