NCCUS WILLIAMS EARNS DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN 59-33 LOSS TO ODU

Redshirt Senior Scores 17 Points and Collects 11 Rebounds

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University women’s basketball teams first half effort fell short as they were defeated by the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion University, 59-33, Friday Dec. 7,  at the Constant Center in Norfolk, Va.

Redshirt senior Chasidy Williams earned her first double-double of the season for the Lady Eagles scoring a total of 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. The Fayetteville, N.C., native also forced seven ODU turnovers, dished out one assist and shot an impressive 11-for-13 from the charity stripe, playing in all but three minutes of the contest. 

Junior Tiffany Gary also contributed offensively and on the boards for NCCU, scoring eight points and grabbing nine boards.

The Lady Eagles stuck first, scoring the first two points of the game from a basket by Gary. NCCU kept the game within five points before a made free throw by freshman Tisha Dixon tied the game at 13 with 10:38 left to play in the opening half.

Neither team scored for the next two and a half minutes before ODU’s Tiffany Minor made a layup to put the Lady Monarchs back up by two going into the eight minute media timeout.

The Lady Eagles struggled offensively for the remainder of the half only earning one more basket before the first half clock expired. NCCU suffered a 12 point defecate going into the locker room, down 27-15.

At the half Williams lead all scorers with 7 points, 7 rebounds and four steals.

ODU started off the second half on a 15-4 run, jumping ahead by 22 with 14:14 left in regulation. The Lady Monarchs led by as many as 28 in the second half before capturing the 59-33 victory over the Lady Eagles.

As a team NCCU shot 25 percent from the field on 9-for-36 shooting, pulled down a total of 31 rebounds, forced 18 ODU turnovers and shot 15-for-27 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Monarchs were led by senior Jackie Cook who led all scorers with 18 points, collected six rebounds, earned two steals and dished out one assist.

Collectively, ODU shot 39 percent from the field on 23-for-59 shooting, gathered 39 rebounds, forced 27 Lady Eagle turnovers, dished out 17 assists, blocked five NCCU shots and shot 8-for-10 from the free throw line. 

The Lady Eagles return to action Wednesday Dec. 12, as they take on the Lady Tar Heels from North Carolina. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.
