2011-12 Women’s Basketball Information Guide
DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team (2-18) closes out the month of January with a Monday, Jan. 29 toe-to-toe matchup against the Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (6-12) at 5:30 p.m. on the NCCU campus in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
In the weekday contest, the mighty maroon and the visiting maroon and gray meet for the sixth time in school history, with UMES heading into the game with a 4-1 series advantage. On Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 the Lady Hawks clenched a one-point 48-47 victory. NCCU junior J'Mia Pollock earned a season-high 10 points, fellow classmate Chasidy Williams netted 12 points, while offensive-leader NCCU graduate Jori Nwachukwu earned her fifth double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
In last season’s contest, the Lady Eagles were 33 percent from the field and 65 percent from the charity stripe.
Two UMES student-athletes scored in double figures, with Kwinnyata Mercer and Chena Parker dropping 10 points each. Parker was one-point shy of a double-double with nine boards. Mercer and Casey Morton passed three assists apiece, while Adobi Agbasi tallied two blocks and Mercer and Amber Cook gathered five steals.
Maryland Eastern Shore hit 29 percent from the field, eight percent from behind the arc and 33 percent from the free-throw line.
The mighty maroon welcomes UMES coming off a 66-55 loss to Delaware State on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Durham, N.C. Sophomore Alesha Jenkins attained her second double-figure high of the season and of her career in maroon and gray with 14 points, as junior Chasidy Williams dropped 11 points in the contest. Williams led in boards with eight, as Jenkins and senior Blaire Houston pulled down seven rebounds apiece.
The maroon and gray finished the matchup at 38 percent from the field on 24-of-63 shooting, 7-of-19 from behind the arc, and 52 percent from the charity stripe, 11-of-21.
On the season, the maroon and gray is 36 percent from the field on 372-of-1031 shooting, 53-of-191 from behind the arc, and 58 percent from the charity stripe, 197-of-340. Williams guides NCCU with 280 points, 141 rebounds, 47 steals and 13 blocks, while freshman Kabrina Truesdale leads in assists with 35.
UMES hits intersate-85 following a 53-50 loss to the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Jan. 28. Chelsea Sanders led the team with 13 points, as Cook amassed 12 points and Agbasi tallied 10 points. Agbasi pulled down eight rebounds and blocked four shots, while Courtney Braxton lobbed three assists.
In the loss, the Lady Hawks is 31 percent from the field on 19-of-62 shooting, 2-of-17 from behind the arc, and 56 percent from the charity stripe, 10-of-18.
