BALTIMORE, MD. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – With an early four-point lead in their claws, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University permitted a 12-0 run by Coppin State to guide the hosts Lady Eagles to an 84-44 victory in the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Md., on Saturday, Jan. 21.
In the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss, junior Chasidy Williams dropped 15 points and was four points shy of achieving a double-double with six rebounds, as senior Blaire Houston netted 10 points and collected three steals.
Sophomore Alesha Jenkins circulated three assists in the afternoon matchup.
NCCU sophomore Tenika Neely dropped the first basket of the competition with a layup at the 19:27 mark for 2-0 lead.
Coppin State’s Shawntae Payne and Leola Spotwood answered back with a shot inside the arc and a three-point basket, respectively, for a 5-2 lead.
The mighty maroon answered back, going on a 12-7 run to obtain a four-point lead by the 14:04 mark.
But, as the visiting Lady Eagles’ offense went cold over five minutes play, CSU hit a 12-0 run for a score of 24-16.
NCCU’s Jenkins snapped the run, going 1-of-2 from the charity and breaking the lead to seven points at the 8:07 mark.
Coppin State continued to maintain its offensive poise, hitting an 18-5 run in the final eight minutes of play for a halftime score of 44-22.
Following the 15-minute halftime intermission, CSU resumed its first-half-home authority, leading by as many as 42 points with a score of 79-37 before cruising to a final 84-44 win.
The maroon and gray finished the hardwood matchup at 43 percent from the field on 18-of-42 shooting, 2-of-8 from behind the arc, and 46 percent from the charity stripe, 6-of-16.
Four members of the CSU squad scored in double figures, led by Jeanine Manley and Spotwood with 17 points apiece, followed by Shawntae Payne with 13 points and wrapped up with 11 points by Larrisa Carter. Spotwood also found success in terms of rebounding with seven, assists with six and blocks with two.
Coppin State was 49 percent from the field on 32-of-66, 4-of-7 from the long range, and 57 percent from the free-throw line, 16-of-28.
NCCU drops to 2-16 on the season and 0-5 in the MEAC, as the Baltimore-based Lady Eagles advance to 9-10 on the season, 4-2 in the MEAC and 3-1 in the series.
The Lady Eagles remain in Maryland in preparation for a Monday, Jan. 23 toe-to-toe contest with the Lady Bears of Morgan State at 5:30 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
