DURHAM, N.C. - Former CIAA rivals North Carolina Central University and Shaw University went toe-to-toe in thrilling men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon in Durham. After more than four hours on the courts, the match came down to the final singles competition, which Shaw rallied to win, capturing the 4-3 team victory.
In doubles play, NCCU's Jack Waissen and Trey Chatman posted a dramatic 8-7 win at the No. 1 position. However, Shaw took an 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles and an 8-0 sweep at No. 3 to earn the doubles point.
In singles action, NCCU's Waissen recorded a clean sweep (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 and Chatman battled for a three-set win (3-6, 6-1, 6-3), but Shaw took singles points at Nos. 5 and 6 positions.
With the overall team score knotted at three points each, the match was decided at No. 4 singles between Shaw junior Ataide Suca and NCCU freshman Andres Perez. Suca won the first set 7-5, while Perez evened the duel by taking the second set 6-3. Perez held a 4-1 cushion in the third and deciding set, but Suca rallied for a 7-5 victory.
