CARY, N.C. (Cary Tennis Center) –
The North Carolina Central University men’s tennis team advanced its record to 5-6 with a 7-0 victory over Virginia State University on Saturday, March 19 in Cary, N.C.
The maroon and grey began their singles and doubles sweep with No. 1 singles student-athlete Jack Waissen defeating Emanuel Haug, 6-0, 7-5. Trey Chatman beat Matthew Brown, 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 3 singles position, Alejandro Espitia overpowered Nicholas Brown, 6-2, 6-3. Andres Perez beat Avery Saunders, 6-3, 6-3. Johnny Brown, Jr. obtained his first win as an NCCU student-athlete with a 7-5, 7-6 vict over Daryl Rice. Christopher Mack concluded singles play with a forfeit win.
NCCU continued its success with Waissen and Chatman defeating Haug and Saunders, 8-5 in the opening round of doubles play. Perez and Espitia teamed up to beat Matthew Brown and Nicholas Brown, 8-2. With a final forfeit by Virginia State, Brown and Mack earned the final doubles point.
The Eagles will continue their play with a Saturday, March 26 matchup against Elon in Elon, N.C., at 9:30 a.m.
