Game Notes: North Carolina Central at Bethune-Cookman
DURHAM, N.C. – On Monday, Feb. 28, in Dayton Beach, Fla., the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team looks to obtain their first-road win of the season during their last away contest of the 2010-11 campaign against the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University.
With three all-time meetings between the two programs, the Lady Eagles and the Lady Wildcats face one another for the second time this season. The two teams met on the McDougald-McLendon hardwood on Feb. 2, 2011. Senior Shanise Blanks poured in a season-high (at the time) 17 points, despite falling 64-53 in Durham, N.C.
Along with Blanks’ season-high performance, senior Jori Nwachukwu scored 11 points and seized 11 boards. Junior Blaire Houston and sophomore Chasidy Williams delivered seven points apiece for the Lady Eagles, while sophomore J’Mia Pollock blocked three Lady Wildcat shots.
NCCU hit 68 percent from the free-throw line, with gratitude to Blanks, the maroon and grey netted 43 percent from behind the arc and scored 28 percent from the field.
Four Bethune-Cookman student-athletes scored in double-figures, Bolden led with 22 points, Amanda Hairston sinked 14 point, while Jasmine Daniels and Jasmine Elum hit 10 points apiece. Daniels also guided the offense with seven assists.
The visitors stole 15 NCCU possessions, scored 74 percent from the charity stripe, netted 38 percent from the field and hit 18 percent from the long range.
The maroon and grey visit the Dayton Beach, Fla., based university following a 59-58 loss to Florida A&M on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Tallahassee, Fla. Nwachukwu and Houston provided the only double-figure performances for the Lady Eagles. The forward poured in 28 points, matching her season-high scoring from Norfolk State (Feb. 19), while Houston, who was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe, netted 13 points.
Nwachukwu, Williams, senior Shanise Blanks and junior Blaire Houston navigate the Lady Eagles offense. Nwachukwu is the leading scorer at 14.4 points per contest, Williams pours in 11.3 points per game, Blanks scores 7.1 points per contest, and Houston rounds out the four with 6.2 points per game.
Bethune-Cookman welcomes the Lady Eagles after suffering a four-point, 64-60 loss to South Carolina State on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Dayton Beach, Fla. Hairston led the offensive campaign with a double-double outing of 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Elum scored 15 points and Sarah Bolden poured in 11 points. Daniels set the offense in motion with seven assists.
Demetria Frank and Elum anchors the Lady Wildcats offense, Frank averages 15.4 points per contest, while Elum nets 13.4. Bolden pulls down 6.8 boards per game.
BCU averages 56.1 points a game, while scoring 37 percent from the field, 27 percent from long range and 67 percent from the free-throw line.
