Game Notes: Coppin State at North Carolina Central
DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team will look for its second straight win on Monday, Feb. 14, as the Lady Eagles welcome the Eagles of Coppin State University to McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
NCCU upended Morgan State 60-49 on Saturday, Feb. 12 for its third win of the season, snapping a 13-game losing streak. Three Lady Eagles scored in double-figures, led by 15 points from senior forward Jori Nwachukwu. Sophomore forward Chasidy Williams also added 15 points, while freshman guard Tenika Neely poured in a season-high 10 points.
Coppin State won their ninth game of the season, while visiting South Carolina State on Saturday, Feb. 12. Larrisa Carter led the Eagles with 17 points, while Shawntee Payne added 16 points and Crystal Whittington netted 12 points and seized eight boards.
The maroon and grey are 0-2 all-time against Coppin State, dropping this season’s first meeting decision on Jan. 15 in Baltimore, Md. The Maryland-based Eagles won the game 59-47.
During the last meeting the Lady Eagles offense was led by Nwachukwu with 17 points. Senior Shanise Blanks sinked 15 points all from behind the three-point arc, while fellow senior Sheresa Mills finished with a season-high six points.
Coppin State had two student-athletes score in double-figures, Jeanine Manley (19) and Whittington (15). Whittington paced the rebounding campaign with nine boards attributing to the team’s total 40.
NCCU leading scorer Nwachukwu, enters the contest coming off her 10th double-double performance this season by adding 11 rebounds to her 15-point outing. On the season, the senior averages 13.4 points per game. Attributing to the Lady Eagles offense in double-figure scoring is Williams, the second-leading scorer nets 11.5 points per contest. Regaining the sharp-shooter title from four consecutive three-point scoring performances is Blanks, who averages 7.1 points per game.
Collectively, the Lady Eagles score 50 points a contest, while giving up 68 points per game.
Jeanine Manly is the sole visiting Eagle to average in double-figures at 11.0 points per game. Carter, Whittington and Payne average around 9.23 points apiece. The four offensive leaders contribute to the team’s average 62.5 points per game, while scoring 40 percent from the field, 27 percent from the behind the three-point arc and 60 percent from the charity stripe.
