EAGLES WIN DOUBLES POINT, HOWARD SWEEPS SINGLES FOR MATCH VICTORY

Top Three Singles Matches Decided in Third Set

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – North Carolina Central University opened the match by capturing the doubles point, but Howard University swept the singles competition to earn a 6-1 victory on Sunday (Feb. 13) on the NCCU tennis courts in Durham, N.C.

NCCU (0-2) won two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, NCCU’s Jack Waissen and Trey Chatman defeated Omar Haloui and Eric Chavous, 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, NCCU’s Alejandro Espitia and Andres Perez dropped Christopher Brown and George Diggs, 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Howard’s Devard Wharton and Bogdan Dzakovic blanked Johnny Brown, Jr. and Christopher Mack, 8-0.

Howard (1-6) cruised to singles victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, with Chavous shutting out Brown (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 and Dzakovic beating Mack (6-0, 6-2) at No. 6.

The top four singles spots did not come as easy for the visiting Bison. The top three singles matches all came down to a deciding third set, and the fourth singles match was won in a second-set tiebreaker. Brown defeated Waissen (6-2, 5-7, 6-3) at No. 1 singles, Haloui beat Chatman (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) at No. 2, Wharton rallied past Espitia (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) at No. 3, and Diggs defeated Perez (6-2, 7-6 [10-8]) at No. 4.

NCCU returns to the courts on Feb. 26 against Morehouse at 12 noon on the campus of NCCU.
