NCCU vs. Gardner-Webb Game Notes
DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – In their the final home contest of 2011, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University take on the Lady Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 6:00 p.m., in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
As the Lady Eagles take on their final Big South opponent of the non-conference regular season, the mighty maroon looks to obtain its third win of the season and the second win on this sixth meeting.
Gardner-Webb, which is located in Boiling Springs, N.C., seized its fourth win of the series on December 7, 2010 at the Paul Porter Arena. In the 62-54 GWU victory, NCCU graduate Jori Nwachukwu, junior Chasidy Williams and senior Blaire Houston all netted in double-figures. Nwachukwu and Williams paced the maroon and gray with 17 points apiece, while Houston dropped 12 points. Nwachukwu and Williams also led the squad in rebounding and steals, with Nwachukwu pulling down seven boards and Williams obtaining five steals.
The Lady Bulldogs clinched their victory off a double-figure outing from former GWU student-athletes Monique Hudson and Sandra Vaituke, with Hudson collecting 14 points and Vaituke gathering 13 points.
NCCU (2-10) returns to the maroon and gray hardwood following a two-game road skid in the Palmetto State, on Sunday. Dec. 18, the Lady Eagles loss 48-68 to Clemson and on Wednesday, Dec. 21 Winthrop defeated NCCU 79-40.
Junior guard Eyandra Molina, sophomore Alesha Jenkins and junior Chasidy Williams finished with 10 points apiece in the loss to Winthrop. Jenkins led the defensive campaign with six rebounds and two blocks, while sophomore Tenika
Neely circulated three assists and Williams stole four possessions. Molina’s 10-point outing was the guard’s career-high performance as a Lady Eagle.
After 40-minutes of the competition, the Lady Eagles were 32 percent from the field on 17-of-54 shooting, 0-of-8 from behind the arc, and 55 percent from the charity stripe, 6-of-11.
On the season, the maroon and gray is 37 percent from the field on 236-of-643 shooting, 38-of-129 from behind the arc, and 58 percent from the charity stripe, 108-of-186.
During the 2011-12 campaign Williams has been the squad’s soaring eagle in points with 180, rebounds at 94, 27 steals, and blocks with eight, while freshman Kabrina Truesdale leads in assists with 26.
Gardner-Webb (0-9) enters the nest following a 10-day competition break. In their last contest on Sunday, Dec. 18, the Lady Bulldogs 65-76 lost to Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
GWU is 32 percent from the field on 148-of-457, 22 percent from behind the arc and 52 percent from the free-throw line, 78-of-151. Catrina Green leads the offense with 83 points on the season, while Jasmine Dale has contributed 65 points to the team’s 393 total. Green guides the rebounding with 70 boards and eight blocks, as Brianna Dillard has circulated 19 assists and Dale has stolen 12 possessions.
