Three Lady Eagles scoring in double-figures and a double-double from junior Chasidy Williams was not enough to subdue the Spartans, as the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team fell 70-53 to UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Nov. 26 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

NCCU senior Blaire Houston led the squad with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while junior Jasmine Alston, who was 3-of-4 from the long range, dropped 13 points and junior Chasidy Williams, who accompanied her 11 points with 10 rebounds, for her second double-double of the 2011-12 campaign.  Williams also led the Lady Eagles in assists with three.

The Lady Eagles only saw the lead in the opening minutes of play, with the mighty maroon taking a four-point margin lead with a score of 8-4 at the 17:43 mark.  UNCG’s Breonna Patterson, who caused trouble for the maroon and gray with a game-high 16 points, hit a three-pointer at the 17:02 mark to gain the lead with a score of 9-8.

Janae’ Stevenson increased the Spartan’s margin to three-points with a layup at the 13:56 mark.  Alston answered back for the Lady Eagles with her first three-point basket of the night to tie the contest at 11 apiece.

From the mark forward, UNCG silenced the NCCU offense going on a 24-11 run over the 12 minutes of play.  The Greensboro squad extended the margin to as many as 15 points before the two teams returned to the locker room for halftime with a score of 35-22.

Over the first-twenty minutes of play, the Spartans forced 17 NCCU turnovers and held the mighty maroon to 36 percent from the field on 9-of-25 shooting.

The maroon and gray returned the hardwood with a 13-point deficit on their wings.

UNCG found even more offensive success in the second half, over the opening 10 minutes of the second half, the Spartans went on a 22-13 run to obtain the largest margin led of the night at 24 points.

Jenkins, who finished at a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, commenced a 16-9 NCCU run, breaking the 24-point margin and bringing the squad within 17 points by the 2:13 mark for a score of 68-51.  Houston dropped the final points of the night with a layup at the 1:10 mark.

UNCG sealed the competition with a70-53 win in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium, forcing a total 29 NCCU turnovers.

Statistically, the Lady Eagles were 45 percent from the field on 22-of-49 shooting, 3-of-5 from behind the arc, and 50 percent from the charity stripe, 6-of-12. 

Along with Patterson’s 7-of-14 shooting for 16 points, Stevenson scored 15 points, as Jarae Savage and Sidnei Harmon finished with 10 points apiece.  Patterson distributed a game-high seven assists, while Harmon collected five steals and Stevenson pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots.  In the 13-point victory, UNCG was 54 percent from the field on 33-of-61, 2-of-9 from the long range, and 67 percent from the free-throw line, 2-of-3.

On the season, the maroon and gray drops to 1-5 and 0-4 in the series, while the Spartans obtain their first win of the season for a record of 1-4.

The Lady Eagles hit the highway for the next competition of the season, traveling to Clinton, S.C., to face Presbyterian on Nov. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
