CHARLOTTE, N.C.- North Carolina Central University junior Cameron Chatman kicked-off the 2011 Lady Eagles tennis campaign with her first singles win of the season during their matchup against the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday, Jan. 29 in Charlotte, N.C.
NCCU’s No. 2 Chatman defeated Gabi Vergara, 6-2, 6-3 on the Niners new Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
Lady Eagles’ sophomore Olesya Palko competed as the No. 1 singles player, where she fell 6-1, 6-4 to Alexndra Zinn. Advancing to the No. 3 position was senior Ashley Rogers, who took Emmanuelle Briant to three sets of play. Briant defeated Rogers 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
NCCU newcomers Kelly Chaparro and Maria Nedstrom made their debut as the No. 4 and No. 5 singles players. Chaparro lost to Anna Ekelund, 6-3, 6-1, as Nedstrom was defeated by Iveta Guneva, 6-0, 6-4.
Senior Tatiana Velasquez closed out singles play in the No. 6 position for the Lady Eagles. Tiffany Vanhpraseuth defeated Velasquez, 6-2, 6-4.
The 49ers dominated doubles, winning all three sets.
Palko and Chatman teamed up as the No. 1 team, dropping an 8-4 decision to Vergara and Ekuland. No. 2 partners, Nedstrom and freshman Frederica Lombard fell 8-4 to Zinn and Vanhpraseuth. Freshman and senior duo Velasquez and Chaparro lost to Briant and Guneva, 8-2.
The Lady Eagles continue their season with a three-match road swing facing UNC Asheville on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. in Asheville, N.C.
