CONWAY, S.C. - The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team earned their first win of the season against the Cobras of Coker College, 7-0, on Saturday, Feb. 6 during the Coastal Carolina double header in Conway, S.C.
The Eagles began the Saturday competition against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. After suffering a 0-7 loss, the Eagles were determined to demonstrate their excellence as a tennis program against Coker.
The competition began with doubles play. No. 1 doubles team senior Kateryna Chorna (Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) and freshman Olesya Palko (Kyiv, Ukraine) came together to defeat Alyssa Blanchard and Stephanie Medley, 8-1. No. 2 doubles team junior Tatiana Velasquez (Cali, Columbia) and sophomore Cameron Chatman (High Point, N.C.) sealed the doubles win with an 8-0 win over Kendall Sigmon and Stephanie Herrelson. Concluding the Eagles dominance during doubles play was the No. 3 team comprised of junior Ashley Rogers (Cary, N.C.) and senior Maria Medina (Bogata, Colombia) defeating Brittany Yando and Emma Hayes, 8-0.
As the Eagles progressed to singles competition, the Eagles supremacy remanded apparent using straight-set wins to the post 7-0 victory over Coker.
NCCU's No. 1 Chorna completed her singles competition defeating Blanchard 7-5, 3-6 (10-8). Followed by No. 2 Cameron Chatman with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Medley. No. 3 Palko gridlocked Sigmon, 6-0, 6-0.
Eagles No. 4 Rogers overthrew Yando, 6-0, 6-1. Coker's Herrelson lost to Eagles' No. 5 Velasquez, 6-1, 6-0. And rounding out the match was No. 6 Medina's win over Hayes, 6-0, 6-1.
Catch the Eagles back on the court next Saturday (Jan. 13) when they host the Mountaineers of Appalachian State at 1 p.m.
