SECOND-HALF SURGE NOT ENOUGH TO SUBDUE GARDNER-WEBB

Lady Eagles outscore Runnin’ Bulldogs 38-26 in the last 20-minutes of play

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Following a halftime intermission score of 16-36 the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team outscored Gardner-Webb University 38-26. But their second-half surge was not enough to defeat the Runnin’ Bulldogs, the maroon and grey fell 54-62 on Tuesday, Dec. 7 in Boiling Springs, N.C. in the Paul Porter Arena.
 
Three student-athletes provided double-digit performances in the loss. NCCU sophomore Chasidy Williams earned a season-high 17 points, while adding five steals and three rebounds in the contest. Junior Blaire Houston joined Williams with her own 12-point season-high accomplishment. Jori Nwachukwu continued to provide double-digit play for the Lady Eagles, obtaining 17 points and seven rebounds.
 
By the completion of the game, NCCU shot 65 percent from the free throw line and 50 percent in the field.
 
Gardner-Webb produced two double-digit performances. A 14-point performance from Monique Hudson and a 13-point in the paint display from Sandra Vaituke. LaTroya Pope grabbed six Runnin’ Bulldogs rebounds, while Dominique Hudson distributed seven assists.
 
As a team, GWU shot 40 percent from the field, 29 percent from behind the arc and 25 percent from the charity line.
 
The first 20-minutes of play were not in the Lady Eagles favor. 
 
Gardner-Webb held NCCU to field goal percentage of 36 and zero percent from behind the arc and the free throw. The host team forced 17 visitor turnovers, and outscored the maroon and grey in every category.
 
Gardner-Webb’s Vaituke opened the contest, scoring the first points at the 19:10 mark. Vaituke paced the Runnin’ Bulldog offense during the first half of play with 12 points. 
 
Houston and Williams did their best to keep the Lady Eagles in the contest scoring six apiece in the first half. From the 11:35 mark, NCCU was 3-for-11 and by the 7:58 mark the Durham, N.C. based program was 0-for-7.
 
At the 6:49 mark, GWU went on a 10-0 run to close out the first-half at 36-to-16.
 
With a fresh 20 minutes on the clock, the Lady Eagles fought to dig themselves out of the 20-point hole.  
 
NCCU revamped its play in every category, rising to 68 percent from the field, obtaining a perfect long range percentage and elevating to 65 percent from the charity line.
 
With a made free throw by Chasidy Williams, NCCU began to chisel away at the double-digit disparity, cutting the margin to six points at the 1:28 mark.
 
NCCU would go on to outscore Gardner-Webb 38-26 in the second half of play.
 
The Lady Eagles will conclude their three-game road trip on Dec. 14 in Buies Creek, N.C. against the Camels of Campbell University.
