DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Johnson C. Smith University forced 21 turnovers and had five players score in double figures during a 93-64 exhibition game victory over North Carolina Central University on Tuesday inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium in Durham, N.C.
JCSU juniors LaQwesha Gamble and Terrica Jones led all scorers with 19 points apiece, while senior Brittane Neely added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, freshman Chante’ Bell contributed 11 points, and senior Shakeena Cunningham recorded 10 points, four assists and three steals for the Golden Bulls.
NCCU received a double-double performance from senior
Jori Nwachukwu with 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Freshman
Justyne Sublett tallied a team-best 12 points with five boards off the Lady Eagle bench.
A host of other NCCU rookies made significant contributions in their first collegiate action.
Tenika Neely posted six points with a game-high seven assists.
Sierra Solomon notched six points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Tiffany Gary had eight points and four caroms. And
Alesha Jenkins contributed six points and four boards.
The Golden Bulls forced 21 NCCU turnovers compared to only 11 miscues of their own. JCSU also gathered 24 offensive rebounds, resulting in a 23-8 advantage in second-chance points.
JCSU stormed out to an early 11-4 lead courtesy of three long-range baskets in the opening five minutes. NCCU scored five unanswered points to trim the deficit to 11-9, but the Golden Bulls used a 13-3 run to take a 24-12 advantage on a Bell jumper at 10:43.
The Lady Eagles managed to reduce the gap to single digits at 29-20 with 8:11 remaining in the first half, but JCSU went on a 20-5 tear to end the half, taking a 49-25 cushion into intermission.
JCSU drained 43 percent (6-of-14) of its three-point attempts in the first half, compared to just 14 percent (1-of-7) by the Lady Eagles.
The second half was much of the same for the visitors from Charlotte, N.C. The Lady Eagles pulled to within 17 points at 51-34 at the 17:21 mark, but that was as close as they got the rest of the way. JCSU enjoyed its biggest lead of 36 points (85-49, 7:01) before cruising to the 93-64 victory.
NCCU opens its regular season on Sunday, Nov. 14 at Wake Forest, while JCSU opens play on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Tuskegee.
