Williams Tops Lady Eagles with 12 Points in Hawaii ‘Showdown’

HONOLULU, Hawaii (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Two-time defending West Coast Conference Player of the Year Courtney Vandersloot used a double-double performance with 22 points and 13 assists to power Gonzaga past North Carolina Central, 94-52, on day two of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Saturday.

Vandersloot shot 9-of-11 from the field, including 2-for-4 from long range, made both free throw attempts and added five steals. Fellow Bulldog guard Katelan Redmon contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, while Meghan Winters and Claire Raap came off the bench to score in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Gonzaga (3-3).

NCCU (1-3) was paced by sophomore Chasidy Williams with 12 points, while senior Jori Nwachukwu tallied 11 points and a team-best four rebounds.

Gonzaga, the WCC champions and Sweet 16 participants a year ago, scored the first 10 points of the contest and shot a blistering 58.3 percent in the first half to take a 51-26 lead into the locker room at intermission. The Bulldogs finished the contest shooting 47.5 percent (38-of-80), compared to 30.2 percent (13-of-43) by the Lady Eagles.

The relentless Gonzaga defensive pressure forced 26 Lady Eagle turnovers resulting in 36 points off of NCCU miscues. The Zags also had a 20-0 advantage in fast-break points and out-rebounded NCCU, 48-28.

NCCU completes its play in the 2010 Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Sunday (Nov. 28) at 11:15 a.m. (4:15 p.m. Eastern) against Long Beach State inside the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawaii.
