HONOLULU, Hawaii (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – North Carolina Central University held an early lead, but the University of Hawaii dominated the glass to cruise to an 82-47 win over the visiting Lady Eagles during opening round play of the 2010 Waikiki Beach Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Friday (Nov. 26).
NCCU (1-2) held a 7-4 advantage after a jumper by freshman
Justyne Sublett at 15:27 of the first half. Hawaii (3-1) went on a 20-4 run over the next six minutes to open up a 13-point cushion at 24-11 with 9:41 left in the half.
It was all Hawaii the rest of the way.
The Rainbow Wahine enjoyed a 39-17 halftime advantage and posted a 35-point victory in front of a home crowd of 1,764.
NCCU senior guard
Shanise Blanks scored 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from long range, while adding five rebounds and three steals. She nailed back-to-back triples with less than six minutes left in the contest to trim the deficit to 22 points (65-43) as Hawaii called timeout.
Sophomore forward
Chasidy Williams also tallied 14 points with a team-high eight boards for the Lady Eagles. The only other double-figure scorer for NCCU was senior
Jori Nwachukwu with 10 points.
Hawaii was paced by Kamilah Jackson with 19 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
NCCU will play Gonzaga at 2:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. Eastern) in the second round of the Waikiki Beach Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Saturday (Nov. 27).
