WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior Jori Nwachukwu earned her first double-double of the season, but her post-play was not enough to push the Lady Eagles past Wake Forest University, as the Demon Deacons cruised to a 111-47 in the 2010 season opener on Sunday, Nov. 14 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Wake Forest forced 38 NCCU turnovers, which the Demon Deacons monopolized into 46 points.
On the night, Nwachukwu earned 16 points and 16 rebounds during her 25 minutes of play. Freshman Bria Byrd came off the bench with nine points to supplement the Lady Eagles’ offense.
Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen had six student-athletes to score in double figures. Freshman Chelsea Douglas and sophomore Sandra Gracia led the offense with 18 points and 17 points, respectively. Sophomore Asia Williams earned the Demon Deacons a double-double during the win, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Lady Eagles’ redshirt sophomore Chasidy Williams made her contribution to the offensive effort with eight points, while grabbing six rebounds.
Along with forcing significant turnovers, Wake Forest secured 34 offensive rebounds for 35 second chance points.
NCCU freshman Alesha Jenkins supplied the first two points of the game, however her endeavor was not enough to stop the Demon Deacons 32-6 first half run.
Following the halftime intermission, the Lady Eagles made their best attempt to snap the Wake Forest 37 point lead. NCCU increased their three-point percentage to 14.3, while maintaining a field goal percentage of 21.4.
Defensively, the Lady Eagles increased their rebounding efforts in the second half, obtaining 28 rebounds. Adding 14 offensive rebounds to the eight during the first half of play and another 14 defensive rebounds to the 11 boards earned during the first 20 minutes of the game.
Wake Forest enhanced its play during the second half as well, attaining a 69 point lead at the 4 minute, 29 second mark, fastening the 111-47 victory.
NCCU will return to the nest for the regular season home opener against Presbyterian on Saturday, Nov. 20 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
