Biography

2013:  Named to All-MEAC Academic team.  Earned second team All-MEAC honors in his final season at NCCU.  Became the first-ever Eagle in the modern era to compile over 200 strikeouts on April 27, 2013 on the road at Florida A&M.  Frye finished with 214 career strikeouts at NCCU which is No. 1 all-time in the modern era.  Set new career-highs in wins with five, innings pitched (88.2-team-high), and a career low number of walks with 14.  His 3.76 ERA was a career best as well as his two complete game shutout victories.  Allowed only four hits with five strikeouts in the 10-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman, marking the first time the Wildcats had been shutout since March 26, 2005.  In his first start of the year (Feb. 17) against NJIT struck out 10 batters with no walks in a 5-1 Eagle victory.  Record at least four strikeouts in nine of his 13 appearances and only walks more than two batters once.  Surrendered double-digit hits only one time (11 at NC A&T-April 6, 2013).  In his final five starts he struck out 28, while walking just eight batters.       

2012: Nominated for All-MEAC and All-State honors after finishing his third season on the hill tied with the most wins (4) on the staff. Tops on the team in starts (13), ERA (4.72-career-low) and complete games (4) throwing the second-most innings (74.1) on the year. Mowed down a team-high 56 batters while walking only 29. Put himself alone at the top of the modern-era’s career strikeout list passing former Eagle Douglas Dalley on March 17 at Bethune-Cookman. Struck out at least one batter in every appearance and recorded more than six strikeouts on five occasions including a season-high nine in the MEAC Tournament against Maryland Eastern Shore (May 17). Was the winning pitcher in NCCU’s first-ever victory over Campbell on May 10 coming on in-relief with 2.0 innings of work allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts. In MEAC play, recorded a 3-1 record with a 3.53 ERA in seven starts throwing two complete games. In conference action threw 43.1 innings allowing 17 earned runs with 16 walks and 22 strikeouts. Earned NCCU’s first Division I MEAC win on March 10 in game two of the doubleheader against arch-rival North Carolina A&T throwing seven innings surrendering seven hits four earned runs with two strikeouts in the Eagles 5-4 win in extra innings. Despite earning a no-decision on March 31 pitched brilliantly against Florida A&M to earn the twinbill sweep going 6.1 innings giving up six hits with one earned run with seven strikeouts as NCCU went on to beat FAMU 8-3.

2011: Arguably the best pitcher on the staff in his second year on the mound. Tied for a team-high 11 starts on the mound and tied for the most wins with two on the season. No. 1 on the roster in innings pitched and finished the season with 67 strikeouts and only 31 walks issued. Finished just four K’s shy of the modern day school record of 71 (Alex Weathersby-2007). Pitched a complete game in NCCU’s 22-5 win over Florida A&M, where he allowed only one earned run and mowed down six batters. Had one of the best modern day performances by an Eagle tying a school record with 13 strikeouts (Alex Weathersby 13 on Feb. 18, 2007 at Morehouse) in a 5-0 shutout which clinched the series win over Coppin State. Earned his first save of the year on April in game two of the doubleheader against Virginia State throwing 3.0 innings and scattered two hits and one run while striking out three batters. Recorded at least one strikeout in all 15 appearances and had 5 or more K’s in six outings. With his remarkable performance in the classroom, was a CoSida Academic All-American team nominee.

2010: Instant impact on the NCCU roster in his first season, with 17 appearances and eight starts on the hill. Finished No. 1 on the roster with 45.1 innings pitched, batters struck out looking (11), tied for first in appearances (17), wins (1) ,saves (1), and pick-offs (1). Ended up third on the roster with 28 strikeouts. Was fourth on the team with eight starts. Earned his first collegiate win on April 10 against Savannah State, when he threw just 1.0 inning. His first collegiate save came against Norfolk State University on April 28 in just 1.2 innings with one strikeout as the Eagles held on for the 5-4 win. One of his top outings of the season came on April 13 at NC State, when he went 6.0 innings and allowed only four earned runs while walking just four batters with one strikeout. Left the game to a standing ovation from the Wolfpack faithful. Had at least two strikeouts in seven outings this season.

High School (Harnett Central H.S.): Boasted a 1.16 ERA his senior season, along with an average of 1.83 strikeouts per inning. Finished 3-1 and also batted .280 on the season. Was a vital member of the 2009 Cape Fear Valley Conference Championship team. Also lettered for three years on the swimming team receiving all-conference honors and qualified to compete in the regionals. His Trojan swimming team won two Cape Fear Valley Conference titles in 2007 and 2009.

Personal: Born on July 2, 1991, and is the son of Freddy and Sheila Frye. Majoring in Computer Science at NCCU.
