Biography
Career Notes:
Played 55 games and started 18 to average 26.1 minutes per game. Finished in the top-10 in scoring in the Division-I era at NCCU with 8.3 points per game. Finished second in field goal percentage (59.5), fourth in rebounding (397) and first in rebounding average at 7.2. Also finished fifth in total blocks (50) and second in blocks per game (0.9).
As a Senior (2016-17)
Played 24 games and started 18 to average 29.8 minutes per game. Shot 62.1 percent from the floor, good for the fourth-highest field goal percentage in a season in the Division-I era at NCCU. Averaged 9.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week three times, including back-to-back weeks (Feb. 20 and Feb. 27). Played 35+ minutes seven times. Pulled down four double-doubles including back-to-back double-doubles when returning from injury with 10 points, 11 rebounds vs. Montreat (Dec. 30) and 14 points and 13 rebounds against Delaware State (Jan. 10). Had a career night with a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds against Savannah State (Feb. 27). Marked his final career double-double in the NCAA Tournament with 13 points and 12 boards against UC Davis (March 15).
As a Junior (2015-16)
Appeared in 31 games and averaged 23.2 minutes per game. Averaged 7.6 points per game and led the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards per outing to finish in the top-15 of the MEAC in that category. Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after averaging 7.0 rebounds per game along with 11.3 points per game and shot 59.1 percent from the floor over a three-game stretch. During that run he picked up a career-high three blocks in a double-double performance at Coppin State (Feb. 18) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Collected three double-doubles, including a season-high 17-point night with 11 rebounds against Johnson & Wales (Jan. 6) and a 15-point, 11-rebound performance against Howard in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament (March 8). Led team in rebounding 11 times, and did so for three-straight games at Savannah State (Jan. 11), and at home against Norfolk State (Jan. 16) and Hampton (Jan. 18).
Prior to NCCU:
As a Sophomore (San Bernardino Valley College, 2014-15)
Named to All-Conference First Team. Averaged 12.9 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game. Shot 71.8 percent from the free throw line. Scored a career-high 27 points with 11 rebounds against Pasadena. Collected a career-high 14 rebounds twice.
As a Freshman (Portland State, 2013-14)
Played 10 games averaging 3.8 minutes per game.
High School (St. Anthony)
Averaged 15.9 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game as a senior, earning All-Santa Fe Conference honors. Led team to Santa Fe League Championship and state quarterfinals. Averaged 12 points and 9.8 rebounds per game his junior year at Gahr High School in Cerritos, Calif. and was on state championship team his sophomore year.
Personal: Parents are Kenneth and Robin Benton. Hobbies include listening to music and hanging out with friends. His goal is to play professional basketball. Majoring in psychology at NCCU.
