Biography

2011:  Despite a horrific hand injury that robbed him of a month of games, came back in the month of April and was named Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month with his comeback performance.  After missing 16 games, he hit 19-for-57 (.333) throughout the month with three doubles, two triples, two homers, 12 runs scored, and 17 RBIs.  His slugging percentage during that 17-game span was .614 with three stolen bases.  Led the team with 24 RBIs, slugging percentage overall (.575), home runs (4) second on the team with a .333 BA.  Was fourth on the team with five doubles, went 7-for-9 in stolen bases and had a fielding percentage of .955.  Defensively made just three errors in 63 putouts in the outfield.  Nominated for the NCCSIA All-State team and NABC All-Region Team.  Ended the season on a five-game hitting streak that included his best performance of the season against Savannah State on April 21 where he went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and five RBIs.  On April 8 and April 12 Smith had back-to-back contests with a triple and a home run after going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored against Virginia State, and a 2-for-4 effort with 2 RBIs, a run scored. 

2010: As a freshman made an immediate impact on the NCCU roster playing and starting in 42 games. Was No. 1 on the team in RBIs (18), doubles (7), triples (7), total bases (67), and stolen bases (18). Finished second on the team in slugging percentage (.441) and hits (43). Tied for second on the squad in runs scored with 25 and was fourth in walks with 13 and tied for fourth with one home run. Batted .283 which was good enough for third. Hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, including a seven-game hitting streak to end the 2010 season. In NCCU’s 5-4 win over Norfolk State went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Prior to getting injured in the final game of the season went 6-for-15 with a double, triple, four runs scored, and four RBIs while going 4-for-5 in stolen bases in a three game span. With runners on third and less than two outs batted 6-for-10, and was 17-for-57 (.298) with two outs. Was second on the roster with 10 two-out RBIs.

High School (Knightdale H.S.): Along with being an honor student his junior and senior years  was named to the Academic All-Conference team.  Also named to the Greater Neuse  All-Conference team.  Led the Knights in home runs his senior year and left KHS as its career home run leader and holds the single-season stolen base record (33). 

Personal: Born March 14, 1990, in Raleigh, N.C. He is the son of Chris and Yvonne Smith. Majoring in Recreation Administration at NCCU.
