Tyler Hanson, formerly the assistant coach at Bates College and Duke University joined the North Carolina Central University Coaching staff in September 2011. Hanson, a 2009 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington earned his degree in Business Economics.
Hanson previously served as an assistant coach at Division-III Bates College from 2009-11, coaching one of those years alongside current Duke assistant coach Edwin Thompson, who was the program’s head coach in 2009 and 2010. Hanson helped Thompson lead the program to a school-record 25 wins in 2010 and the 19th-best batting average in the Division-III baseball. During his tenure, Hanson mentored an all-conference catcher and helped the program lead the NESCAC in home runs, stolen bases and fielding percentage in 2010.
After leaving Bates College after one full year, Hanson joined the Duke University baseball program as an assistant coach. While at Duke, he was the camp coordinator and ran the catching program. He mentored a starting catcher that was ranked top 10 in the ACC in batting average.
Hanson was a four year starter behind the plate and was a two-time North Atlantic All-Conference selection at the University of Maine at Farmington and ranks among the top 10 in school history in home runs. He captained the team as a junior and senior, led the squad to two conference playoff berths and hit a combined .346 as a sophomore and junior when he earned all-conference recognition. Hanson also received the team’s Golden Glove Award in 2007 when he posted a .993 fielding percentage.
A native of Sanford, Maine, Hanson also enjoyed a stint with the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2010 where he served as hitting coach and helped the team finish with a 23-19 record. He was also involved with the Bates College football program as an assistant coach charged with instructing wide receivers and assisting with special teams.
