CARY, N.C. – North Carolina Central closed out its weekend series against Delaware State with a 3-1 softball loss at Thomas Brooks Park on Sunday.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Hornets took a 3-0 lead on a bases-loaded, two-out triple.
Izabella Chavez drove in NCCU's only run in the sixth inning. She scored
Tyler Suttles on a sacrifice fly after Suttles led off with her MEAC-leading sixth triple of the season.
The Eagles (5-10 MEAC, 7-32 overall) threatened in the seventh inning as
Kristin Corner and
Daiyah Bailey each collected a hit. But with NCCU runners on first and third with two outs, the Hornets (9-6 MEAC, 18-16 overall) recorded a strikeout to end the contest.
Bailey and Corner led NCCU with two hits apiece. Chavez, Suttles and
Mia De La Fuente each added a hit for the Eagles, who had seven hits.
Madeline Janssen was solid in the circle despite the loss. She held the Hornets hitless through five innings and finished with a four-hitter through seven complete innings with seven strikeouts and two walks.
