Eagles Fall Twice To Delaware State Despite Bailey’s Strong Showing

CARY, N.C. – Daiyah Bailey scored four runs and collected two RBIs but North Carolina Central dropped two games in a softball doubleheader to Delaware State at Thomas Brooks Park on Saturday. The Eagles fell 6-3 in the opener and 14-6 in five innings in the second game.

Her two-run single in the first game sparked a three-run, seventh-inning rally that nearly erased a 6-0 deficit. Izabella Chavez added an RBI double that scored Bailey in the inning but the Eagles came up just short.

Chavez batted 2 for 3 at the plate and Kristin Corner was 2 for 2 with a double and one run scored. Janea Hudson also scored a run for the Eagles (5-9 MEAC, 7-31 overall), who totaled six hits while Delaware State (8-6 MEAC, 17-16 overall) finished with eight hits.

Bailey continued producing in the second game, batting 3 for 3 with three runs scored including a score in a four-run third inning which gave the Eagles a 5-2 lead. She added a run in the fourth inning off a triple by Tyler Suttles.

Mia De La Fuente tallied a team-high two RBIs and scored one run while Suttles batted 2 for 2 with one run to go with her RBI triple. Chavez scored once and Corner drove in a run for the Eagles, who tied the Hornets with seven hits.

Despite their production, Delaware State gained control with 12 runs in the final two innings including 10 in the fourth.
