ORLANDO, Fla. – North Carolina Central's men's tennis team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with its fourth win in five days, sweeping the competition in Florida. The Eagles defeated Fairfield 4-2 on Thursday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
The Eagles earned the doubles point, as they have done all week. After Antoni Pankowski and Naresh Bharathy won at No. 2 doubles, Kareem Abdul Hakim and Rodrigo Alves secured the point with a 7-6 victory at No. 1 doubles, taking the tiebreaker 7-5.
NCCU (7-5) extended its lead to 2-0 once singles play began, as Alves won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4. The Stags answered with a win at No. 4 singles.
Two freshmen then clinched the match for NC Central. Santiago Pinna won at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4, while Pol Puig Montiel delivered the Eagles' fourth point with a tight first set followed by a 6-3 second-set win at the No. 6 position.
Fairfield (1-9) added a victory at No. 3 singles to make the score 4-2. The No. 1 singles match was the final contest of the day. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Bharathy forced another tiebreaker to claim the second set. In the deciding match tiebreaker, Bharathy and his opponent, Kacper Krolikowski, were tied 3-3 when rain began to fall, leaving the match unfinished.
The Eagles will face Hampton on Wednesday, March 18 at noon. NCCU will host the Pirates at Elmira Tennis Courts in Durham, N.C.
