ORLANDO, Fla. – In its third match in four days, North Carolina Central's men's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over St. Thomas on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Cane Tennis Center.
For the third time during their Florida trip, the Eagles entered singles play with momentum after securing the doubles point. NCCU swept the doubles matches, highlighted by a 7-6 win at No. 3 from Pol Puig Montiel and Leo Fortier-Gariepy.
Puig Montiel and Rodrigo Alves extended the lead with singles victories. Alves won convincingly at the No. 2 position with a pair of 6-1 sets, while Puig Montiel prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 slot.
St. Thomas (1-6) picked up two points with wins at No. 6 and No. 1 singles. Santiago Pinna (No. 4) and Antoni Pankowski helped the Eagles regain momentum as both matches went to three sets. Pankowski needed two set tiebreaks but secured the win in the final match of the day at the No. 3 slot.
NCCU (6-5) will play one more match in Orlando on March 12, facing Fairfield at 11 a.m. at the USTA National Campus.
