CLEARWATER, Fla. – North Carolina Central concluded the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic with a 5-0 softball loss to South Alabama at the Eddie C. Moore Complex on Sunday morning.
Three Eagles each collected a hit including
Daiyah Bailey,
Mia De La Fuente and
Izabella Chavez. Starting pitcher
Madeline Janssen and
Simone Mack combined to scatter seven hits and record two strikeouts in six innings.
The game was scoreless through two innings before South Alabama (3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. A two-run homer in the fourth and a solo homer in the fifth expanded its lead.
NCCU, as it had throughout the tournament, gave a solid showing. The Eagles (0-5) loaded the bases twice despite securing three hits.
In the fourth,
Elana Krupey led off with a walk and Fuente hit a single. The bases were full with one out after
Sierra Soto was hit by a pitch but South Alabama managed to escape the inning.
The Eagles mounted another threat in the fifth.
Janea Hudson opened the inning with a walk and
Adriana Person reached first on a throwing error. Chavez hit a two-out single to fill the bases but a strikeout ended the inning.
NEXT UP
The Eagles will head to Covington, Ga., for the HBCU Collegiate Invitational this weekend. They will play five games in three days starting with Alcorn State on Friday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m.
