DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central men's basketball was shorthanded in its 100-67 road loss at Howard on Saturday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium. Seniors Kelechi Okworogwo and Kyric Davis combined for 43 points to lead the Eagles.
NCCU (10-16, 6-5 MEAC) dropped its second straight game, closing out a three-game stretch this week. The Eagles had just eight players available against a deep Bison squad.
Davis led all scorers with 23 points on 69.2 percent shooting from the field. Okworogwo added 20 points and eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes.
NC Central shot 42.3 percent from the field in the first half but went just 1-of-6 from 3-point range. Howard knocked down six first-half threes and shot 50 percent overall from distance, taking a 42-26 lead into the break.
The Eagles improved their shooting percentage in the second half, but Howard continued to extend the margin, going 21-of-29 from the field over the final 20 minutes. The Bison held advantages in points off turnovers (24-11), fast-break points (18-2) and bench scoring (34-4). NCCU did capitalize on second-chance opportunities, holding a 23-14 edge.
Howard (18-10, 8-3 MEAC) led from start to finish. Travelle Bryson and Cedric Taylor III combined for 43 points for the Bison, with Bryson shooting 10-of-11 from the field.
NCCU returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 28, at Delaware State. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. as the Eagles begin the final stretch of the regular season with three games remaining.
