CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a tightly contested match against Campbell, North Carolina Central fell just short, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center.
NCCU (1-3) opened strong by securing the doubles point. Rodrigo Alves and Kareem Abdul Hakim earned a win at No. 1 doubles, while Leo Fortier-Gariepy and Pol Puig Montiel claimed victory in the No. 3 spot.
Campbell (2-3) responded in singles play, pulling even and then taking the lead with wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Alves tied the match with an impressive performance at No. 2 singles, highlighted by a 7-3 tiebreaker to clinch the second set.
The Camels regained a 3-2 advantage with a win at No. 1 singles, but Antoni Pankowski evened the score once again with a three-set victory at No. 5. Campbell ultimately clinched the match at No. 6 singles, where Fortier-Gariepy fell in a hard-fought three-set battle.
The Eagles return to Chapel Hill to face the home team, North Carolina at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15.
