NORFOLK, Va. – Two student-athletes from the North Carolina Central men's and women's track and field teams nabbed MEAC weekly honors, announced by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday. Tia Lucas was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Week, while Zion Amadi took home his second Men's Track Athlete of the Week award this indoor season.
Lucas sits at the top of the conference in the women's high jump event after a 1.74m performance at the Liberty Open last weekend. That same height ties her second on the Division I Southeast region performance list. The senior has already won the high jump in two meets this season.
Amadi broke his own school record at the Liberty Open, finishing first at 21.01 seconds in the men's 200m dash. His original record was 21.13 seconds last month. The sophomore also won the men's 400m race in 47.20 seconds, moving into second place in the NCCU records book in the Division I era.
Amadi is currently first in the conference in both events, as well as in the top 20 of the Division I indoor qualifying list for the 200m. He's also ninth (200m) and seventh (400m) on the Southeast region performance list.
The Eagles will not compete the next two weeks, preparing for the Pre-National Indoor Meet, hosted by Norfolk State at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Feb. 13-14.
