DURHAM, N.C. – Fabrienne Swepson's interim tag has been removed after North Carolina Central University named her Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Director of Athletics Dr. Louis "Skip" Perkins announced on Wednesday.
"Removing Coach Swepson's interim tag is a reflection of just how far this program has come," said Dr. Perkins. "Year after year, our track and field and cross country teams have elevated their performances, their expectations, and their standards of excellence. We're truly happy to keep her in the Nest and excited for all that she'll continue to build with our student-athletes."
Swepson joined NCCU in 2021 as a track and field assistant, primarily working with the throwers, before assuming the interim director role prior to the 2024-25 indoor season.
Since taking the helm, the Eagles have posted some of their best finishes at the conference championships during the Division I era. At the 2026 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, both the men's and women's teams recorded their highest point totals ever as a Division I program, while NCCU collected 17 medals for its best overall medal haul.
The women's track and field team finished third at the MEAC Indoor Championships in consecutive seasons. Both the men's and women's teams also finished fourth at the 2025 and 2026 MEAC Outdoor Championships, marking their highest finishes at the outdoor championship.
NCCU hosted the 2025 MEAC Cross Country Championships, where both Eagle squads placed third. Four NCCU runners earned All-MEAC honors at the championship.
Under Swepson's leadership, five Eagles have competed at the NCAA Outdoor East Regional Track & Field Championships over the past two seasons. Multiple NC Central student-athletes have also earned MEAC Weekly Awards and College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors, while achieving Southeast regional rankings and setting school records.
Prior to landing in the Nest, Swepson was a track and field assistant at Research Triangle High School for seven years, helping guide the Raptors to numerous conference, regional and state titles. She also served for three years as the head coach of the Triangle Champions Track Club.
Swepson competed as a track and field student-athlete at NC State before later running cross country at Fayetteville State, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.
