Eagles Stay Hot with Win at Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. – The North Carolina Central men's basketball team wrapped up its two-game road trip with an 89-78 victory at Morgan State on Monday evening. The Eagles had five scorers in double figures led by Khouri Carvey and Gage Lattimore at Hill Field House.

NCCU (7-11, 3-0 MEAC) is off to its best start in conference play since the 2018-19 season, where the Eagles opened MEAC action winning three straight. Carvey finished with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Lattimore netted 20 points and grabbed six boards. Kelechi Okworogwo also had a strong performance with 17 points in 18 minutes off the bench on 6-of-6 shooting from the field.

Morgan State (4-13, 1-2 MEAC) has plagued the Eagles the two previous seasons, winning all four games. NCCU was able to end the streak and remain unbeaten in MEAC action.

Both teams played a close first half. NC Central led fast break points 11-2, while Morgan State took advantage of NCCU's mistakes with a 12-4 advantage on points off turnovers. The Eagles would head into halftime up 35-32 on the Bears.

That lead would remain with NC Central the rest of the way as the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to open the second half. Dionte Johnson sparked the offense as he dished 10 assists to his teammates.

NCCU shot 72.7 percent (16-of-22) in the second half relying on paint points and fast break opportunities. The Eagles also took better care of the ball with only three turnovers in the final 20 minutes. NC Central also made it count from the free throw line, going 20-of-24 in the second half.

Morgan State's Alfred Worrell Jr. lead all scorers with 29 points. The Bears were within four points with under three minutes to play, but the Eagles closed out the contest on a 15-8 run.

The Eagles return to the Nest, hosting Howard on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 4:30 p.m.
