NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central will enter the MEAC Softball Championship as the No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 seed Morgan State on Wednesday, May 7, in Norfolk, Va. at 2 p.m. The MEAC office released the tournament bracket on Wednesday, April 30.
The Eagles were one of six teams that qualified for the MEAC Championship, a double-elimination tournament over four days that will determine the conference champion at NSU Softball Field on Norfolk State's campus. The winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
NCCU (13-31 overall) ended the regular season 10-10 in the conference, one spot below Morgan State which posted a 12-9 league mark. Morgan State (17-27 overall) tied Delaware State for third place but lost the tiebreaker. Howard captured the regular season title and Norfolk State claimed the No. 2 seed. South Carolina State is the No. 6 seed.
The NCCU-Morgan State winner takes on top-seed Howard later Wednesday at 8 p.m. The NCCU-Morgan State loser plays a game in the elimination bracket on Thursday, May 8, at 2 p.m.
This will be the fourth meeting between the Eagles and the Lady Bears this year. The Lady Bears won the season series two to one during the regular season. The Eagles rebounded from doubleheader losses the previous day to win 3-2 on April 6 in Cary, N.C.
NCCU defeated every tournament team at least once with the exception of Howard this season. The Eagles took two of three games against South Carolina State and Norfolk State.
