Eagles Split Doubleheader Thriller With South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – North Carolina Central scored four runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 5-1 victory over South Carolina State in the first game of a MEAC softball doubleheader at Lady Bulldog Softball Field on Saturday. The second game was also in extra innings but the Eagles fell short 9-8 in the ninth.

Both teams play again Sunday in the final game of the series. The first pitch is at noon.

The Eagles (12-31, 9-10 MEAC) took command in the eighth inning of the first game. An RBI triple by Makiya Graves and a fielding error by South Carolina State put the Eagles up 3-1. Jaden Davis padded the lead with a two-run single.

Davis, the starting pitcher, finished off the Lady Bulldogs (14-19, 10-10 MEAC) in the bottom half of the eighth. She forced a groundout and struck out the next two batters for the win.

Davis upped her pitching record to 8-4 in conference games. The eight wins are the most in the MEAC this season. She scattered six hits in eight innings with a season-high 11 strikeouts in addition to three walks and zero earned runs.

Graves batted 2 of 4 with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored for the Eagles, who totaled nine hits. Her RBI groundout in the sixth inning tied the score 1-1.

Davis was 2 of 4 with two RBIs and one stolen base while Daiyah Bailey was 2 of 4 with one run scored. Kendall Smith was 2 of 4 with a double, triple and one run scored. Tyler Suttles and Takia Nichols each scored one run for NCCU.

The second game featured five lead changes before the Lady Bulldogs rallied in the ninth. The Eagles led 8-7 in the top half of the inning on Graves' RBI groundout. The Lady Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom ninth for the victory.

Graves drove in two runs and Bailey batted 2 of 4 with one RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored for the Eagles, who collected six hits. Smith had a double, one RBI and one run scored and Cameron Frye tallied a double and two runs scored. Takia Nichols registered an RBI while Samaria Jackson and Kia Borum each scored a run.

Kaylah Leslie batted 4 of 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored and LaKauree Munyan batted 3 of 5 with three RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs, who finished with 11 hits.
