Eagles Set Season Highs In 16-4 Rout Over South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – North Carolina Central set season highs in runs, hits and RBIs to steamroll South Carolina State 16-4 at Lady Bulldog Softball Field on Sunday.

The Eagles (13-31, 10-10 MEAC) moved up one spot to fifth in the standings in the final MEAC weekend of the regular season. The Lady Bulldogs (14-20, 10-11 MEAC) fell from a third-place tie to fifth. The rout tilted the season series two games to one in the Eagles' favor. Both teams split a doubleheader the day before.

Several players contributed to the offensive outburst for the Eagles, who amassed 16 hits and 11 RBIs and led 13-0 in the third inning. NCCU last reached 16 runs and 16 hits in 2023, which also happened in the same game. The Eagles defeated Delaware State 16-2 on April 1 that year.

On Sunday, Samaria Jackson was 2 of 3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored and Tyler Suttles batted 4 of 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Makiya Graves was 2 of 4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Daiyah Bailey was 3 of 3 with an RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Kendall Smith hit 3 of 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored and Kia Borum scored two runs and recorded two stolen bases.

Jaden Davis threw a four-hitter in five innings to pick up her league-leading 12th pitching victory. Her nine wins in conference games also tops the MEAC. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.

The Eagles' bats were hot from the outset. A two-run double by Graves and a one-run single by Smith gave NCCU a 3-0 first-inning lead. NCCU scored five runs in the second inning on a two-run single by Suttles, a two-run double by Jackson and a one-run double by Smith.

NCCU added five more runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Bailey, an RBI groundout by Takia Nichols, an RBI single by Jackson and a throwing error that scored Smith and Jackson. The score was 13-0 when Smith and Jackson scored.

The Eagles scored their final three runs in the fifth. Two fielding errors scored Jackson, Graves and Smith for a 16-2 lead.

NCCU will now await the release of the MEAC Championship bracket. The double-elimination tournament is May 7-10 in Norfolk, Va.
