Eagles Top Delaware State 1-0 In Pitching Duel

DOVER, Del. – North Carolina Central scored the game's only run in the sixth inning to top Delaware State 1-0 on Saturday in the final game of their MEAC softball series at DSU Softball Field.

Makiya Graves' two-out single to center field combined with a Delaware State error scored Kia Borum in the sixth. Borum reached base on a bunt single and advanced to second base on Daiyah Bailey's sacrifice bunt.

Graves finished the day batting 2 of 3 with a stolen base and one RBI. Borum batted 1 of 2 with one run scored for the Eagles, who managed five hits.

Jaden Davis threw her second shutout of the season to get the win over Kaylanie Rodriguez of Delaware State in a pitching duel. The NCCU senior fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks in seven complete innings. Davis, the MEAC leader with 104 strikeouts this season, is 7-4 in conference games.

The Hornets (21-21, 9-9 MEAC) threatened in the seventh inning with a runner on second base and one out. But Davis struck out the next two batters for the NCCU victory.

NCCU (11-30, 8-9 MEAC) begins the final week of the regular season Tuesday at Appalachian State in a non-conference tilt. The first pitch is at 2 p.m.
