NCCU Tops Podium in 13 Events at Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's and women's track & field teams had a dominant showing in the first outdoor meet of the season. The Eagles won 13 events at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational on March 7-8 at the Harold Greene Track & Field Complex.

NC Central was victorious in two different jump events. Malcom Forbes came in first in the men's triple jump leaping 14.52m. Also, Tia Lucas cleared 1.65m winning the women's high jump. Representing throws, Sa'Niya Fowler took home first in the women's shot put with a 13.25m throw.

On the oval, Melanne Sutton earned two victories, one in the women's 100m (11.64) and another in the 200m (24.30). The Eagles also took home the men's 100m and 200m as Deshaun Johnson (100m – 10.71) and Zion Amadi (200m – 21.47) outran their opponents.

NCCU triumphed in three individual 400m events as Cashmere James (men's 400m – 47.51), Nyree Bacchus (women's 400m – 55.70) and Gianna Marquez (women's 400m hurdles – 1:04.97) crossed the finish line first. The Maroon & Gray prevailed in the women's 4x400m relay as well with the team of Bacchus, Marquez, Sutton and Kayla Johnson running 3:58.42.

Johnson and Alitza Dennard competed in distance events. Johnson's women's 800m performance (2:14.53) and Dennard's time of 18:32.59 in the women's 5000m garnered first place finishes.

The next meet that the Eagles are scheduled to compete in is at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State at the Paul Derr Track on March 27-29.
