GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina Central put up a strong fight in a 4-1 softball loss to UNC Greensboro on the final day of the UNCG Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles started the day with an 8-0 loss to Michigan at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Eagles fared better against Southern Conference contender UNCG than the previous two meetings, a 14-5 loss on Feb. 6 and a 10-2 loss on Friday. The score was tied 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth when the Spartans (17-7) scored three runs for the eventual final score.
That one inning was the difference in a tightly-contested game that featured effective pitching from both teams. NCCU and UNCG had five hits each.
Jaden Davis of NCCU tallied a game-high five strikeouts and three walks in six innings. She allowed one earned run, a solo homer by Jessie Shipley in the first inning.
The Eagles (1-19 overall) quickly tied the game in the second inning.
Cameron Frye doubled and later scored on
Elana Krupey's single.
Three NCCU errors in the fourth inning determined the outcome. The miscues helped UNCG score three runs in the inning. The Eagles totaled four errors against the Spartans.
In the first game, Michigan (17-7) relied on two big innings to top NCCU. The Eagles trailed 2-0 through two innings but the Wolverines scored three runs each in the third and fifth innings for the win.
The Eagles were held hitless while the Wolverines totaled seven hits.
NCCU is on the road again early next week before hosting its home opener. The Eagles travel to Western Carolina for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11. The very next day, they play archrival N.C. A&T in a home game at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
