Eagles Beat Western Carolina To Gain Doubleheader Split

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – North Carolina Central has shown improvement in the last eight softball games. Now it has a victory to show for it.

Daiyah Bailey finished with three RBIs on 5 of 5 hitting, Elana Krupey knocked in two runs and North Carolina Central collected a season-high 15 hits in a 10-7 softball win over Western Carolina in the second game of a Tuesday doubleheader.

The Eagles recovered nicely from a 15-2 loss in the first game. The twinbill was held at Catamount Softball Complex.

NCCU has either led or tied in six of their last eight games. The Eagles held on this time for the win in the second game against the Catamounts.

Jaden Davis shut the door on a Western Carolina comeback in the seventh inning. The Catamounts (13-12 overall) hit a two-run homer to pull with three runs and threatened with runners on first and second base with one out. Davis bared down and struck out the next two batters to preserve the victory for the Eagles (2-20), who played 22 straight games away from home to start the season.

Davis picked up her second pitching win of the season. She scattered nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks in seven full innings.

Bailey led the Eagles' offensive surge with a double, one run scored and three stolen bases to go with three RBIs. Krupey batted 2 of 4 with a double in addition to her two RBIs.

Kia Borum was 2 of 4 with two runs scored while Takia Nichols and Cameron Frye both had an RBI and two runs scored. Samaria Jackson and Nyla Rodgers each tallied an RBI and one run scored.

NCCU, keyed by Bailey's three-RBI double, scored seven runs in the top of the fifth for an 8-0 lead. The Catamounts came back with four runs in the bottom fifth but the Eagles tacked on two runs in the top sixth on Krupey's two-run double for a 10-4 lead. The Catamounts' rally in the last two innings fell short, thanks to strikeouts by Davis.

NCCU led 1-0 in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Graves.

In the first game, the Eagles led 2-1 through two innings but Western Carolina scored five runs in the third inning and nine runs in the fifth inning. NCCU scored in the second inning on RBIs by Krupey and Borum.

The Eagles totaled three hits to WCU's 17 in the first game.

NCCU is looking to carry momentum from the victory to Wednesday's home opener against archrival North Carolina A&T in a rematch. Game time is 1 p.m. at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
