CARY, N.C. – North Carolina Central won a thriller against its archrival in its home softball opener on Wednesday.
Makiya Graves scored on a throwing error in the ninth inning to give North Carolina Central a 4-3 win over North Carolina A&T at Thomas Brooks Park. The victory was the second in a row for the Eagles, who avenged a 14-6 road defeat to A&T last month.
Jaden Davis tied the game 3-3 in the eighth inning on a triple to left field that scored
Daiyah Bailey. The Eagles (3-20 overall) trailed 3-1 in the inning but Bailey reached base on an A&T error that scored
Elana Krupey, who started the eighth on second base per international rules. Davis followed with the game-tying triple after going 0 for 4 in her previous at-bats.
Davis then retired the side in the top ninth, recording two strikeouts. Graves scored the game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning.
Davis was exceptional on the mound in picking up her third pitching win and second in two days. On Tuesday, she was the winning pitcher in a 10-7 victory over Western Carolina in the second game of a doubleheader.
Against A&T, Davis tossed a four-hitter on a season-high 10 strikeouts and three walks in nine complete innings. She allowed one earned run.
NCCU totaled eight hits against the Aggies (5-17). Graves batted 2 of 4 with one run scored and
Cameron Frye went 3 of 4. Bailey batted 2 of 5 with one run scored for the Eagles, who left 13 runners on base.
The Eagles scored first in the third inning on
Takia Nichols' sacrifice fly which scored
Kia Borum. The Aggies tied the score in the fourth inning. Neither team scored again until the eighth inning.
Katriel Williams was 2 of 3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored for the Aggies, who had five errors.
The Eagles take their two-game win streak to Howard this weekend in the MEAC opening series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, in Washington, D.C. at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The third game is Sunday, March 16, at noon.
