BALTIMORE, Md. – Tyler Suttles amassed a season-high four RBIs and
Jaden Davis hurled a three-hit shutout for North Carolina Central in a 10-0 five-inning victory over Coppin State to take the MEAC season series at the Coppin State Softball Complex on Sunday.
The Eagles (7-26, 4-5 MEAC) won two out of three games against Coppin State (3-16, 3-6 MEAC) over the weekend. Both teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Suttles and Davis led the Eagles to an easy win on Sunday. Batting second, Suttles drove in nearly half of NCCU's runs. She went 3 of 4 with two doubles and two runs scored in addition to the four RBIs.
Davis was superb on the mound for the fourth straight start. She struck out five batters and walked two in five innings to preserve the shutout. In her last four appearances, Davis is 4-0 with 27 strikeouts, 6 walks and 5 runs allowed. Her earned run average during that stretch is 1.35. This is the fifth shutout for Davis in her collegiate career.
The Eagles, highlighted by Suttles, pounded out nine hits.
Daiyah Bailey went 2 of 4 with three stolen bases and three runs scored.
Makiya Graves finished with an RBI and two runs scored and
Cameron Frye was 2 of 2 with an RBI and one run scored.
Kia Borum batted 1 of 2 with one run scored and
Wynter Williams scored one run.
NCCU took charge from the outset. Graves and Frye both hit RBI singles for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Suttles blasted a two-run double and
Takia Nichols had a sacrifice fly in the second inning to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Eagles scored three runs on a Graves' fielder's choice and a Coppin State throwing error on the same at-bat in the fourth inning. Suttles finished off Coppin State with a two-run double in the fifth inning.
NCCU will be at home the next two weekends starting with a three-game MEAC series against Morgan State on April 5-6. The series will take place at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
