RADFORD, Va. – The NC Central women's tennis team fought for the final point in a 4-3 victory at Radford on Sunday afternoon. Junior Alejandra Hidalgo Vega clinched the match's final point in three sets.
NCCU (5-7) headed into singles competition up one after securing the doubles point. Mariana Zottoli and Valeria San Miguel Soria took No.2 Doubles 6-3, while duo Valentina de Aquino Monsanto and Hidalgo Vega won 6-4 in the No.3 slot.
Sophomore Patricia Palencia extended the lead for the Eagles with a pair of 6-1 sets in the No.4 Singles position.
Radford (3-7) triumphed in No.2 and 5 Singles to tie up the match. NC Central's Gabriela Mejia Arenas brought the Maroon and Gray back to the forefront with a 6-4, 7-6 victory after a 7-4 tiebreaker sealed No.6 Singles.
With the Highlanders gathering another point in No.3 Singles, the match stood at 3-3. In the No.1 position, Hidalgo Vega led first by winning set one, 6-4. After falling 4-6 in the second set, she dominated the third set 6-2, giving the Eagles the winning fourth point.
NCCU opens conference play at the MEAC Round-Up on March 28-30 hosted by Howard University. The first opponent for the Eagles will be Delaware State on Friday, March 28 at noon at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Md.
