CARY, N.C. – Nyla Rodgers drew a bases-loaded RBI walk in the sixth inning to give North Carolina Central a 2-1 MEAC softball win over Norfolk State at Thomas Brooks Park on Sunday.
The Eagles finished the weekend winning two of three games in the series. Both teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Relying on her keen batting eye, Rodgers waited patiently at the plate as the pitch sailed high in the catchers' mitt for a ball. The walk scored
Makiya Graves from third base.
NCCU (5-25, 2-4 MEAC) loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Graves,
Takia Nichols and
Samaria Jackson. One batter later, the Eagles scored on Rodgers' walk.
Jaden Davis, who picked up her second win in two days, shut down the side in the top of the seventh inning. She recorded a strikeout and forced a flyout and groundout.
The Eagles' pitcher was proficient against the Spartans for the second straight day. She hurled a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks. Davis only allowed three runs in 14 innings of pitching.
The Spartans (10-14, 3-3 MEAC) scored their only run in the second inning but the lead held up until the fourth inning.
Codi Mann of NCCU scored on a wild pitch from third base after pinch running for Nichols, who hit a leadoff double in the fourth.
The score was tied until the dramatic sixth inning.
Nichols batted 2 for 3 with a double for the Eagles, who registered seven hits. Other batters credited with hits were
Daiyah Bailey,
Tyler Suttles and
Kia Borum in addition to Graves and Jackson.
The Eagles play again next weekend against Coppin State in Baltimore, Md. A doubleheader is set for Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. A single game is scheduled for Sunday, March 30, at 12 p.m.
