CARY, N.C. – North Carolina Central trounced Winston-Salem State and Chowan by 7-0 scores for its first women's tennis victories of the season at Cary Tennis Park on Saturday.
The Eagles improved to 2-3 overall with the wins. Winston-Salem State dropped to 0-1 and Chowan fell to 0-2.
Valeria San Miguel Soria captured her first singles win this season and
Valentina de Aquino Monsanto earned the first singles victory of her career against Winston-Salem State. Soria, a junior, won No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Monsanto, a freshman, was victorious in No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0.
NCCU gained one point after sweeping doubles play against WSSU. The No. 2 team of
Patricia Palencia and
Mariana Zottoli won 6-0 to start the match and the tandem of Soria and
Alejandra Hidalgo Vega won 6-2 in No. 1 doubles. The duo of
Gabriela Mejia Arenas and Monsanto won No. 3 doubles by default.
Soria scored the first singles point in No. 2 singles and Palencia won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. After Monsanto took No. 5 singles, Zottoli won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.
Vega finished off the Rams with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph in No. 1 singles. Arenas won No. 6 singles by default.
Arenas collected her first singles win against competition in the Chowan match. She was a winner in No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.
The Eagles led 1-0 after doubles competition. Vega and Soria won 6-1 in No. 1 doubles and Zottoli and Palencia won 6-0 in No. 2 doubles. Monsanto and Arenas won 6-0 in No. 3 doubles.
Arenas' win in No. 6 singles put the Eagles ahead 2-0. Vega posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 1 singles and Palencia recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 4 singles.
Zottoli won No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1 and Soria was victorious in No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0 for a 6-0 NCCU lead. Monsanto won No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-2 to finish off Chowan.
The Eagles return to action against Mount Olive in a road match on Thursday, Feb. 13. The match begins at 2 p.m. in Mount Olive, N.C.
