GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jaden Davis drove in two runs,
Nyla Rodgers added an RBI and North Carolina Central played East Carolina close before falling 9-3 at Joyner Family Stadium on Wednesday night.
Davis was solid at the mound despite the loss. She allowed 10 hits and walked three batters but struck out four and allowed two earned runs in nearly going the distance. The senior hurler pitched 5.2 innings.
The Pirates (9-5 overall) scored four runs on four hits for a 4-0 lead in the first inning but Davis kept ECU at bay until the sixth inning. She bailed NCCU out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the fourth inning.
The livestream announcers marveled at how Davis befuddled several ECU batters.
The Eagles (1-10)Â scored their first run in the second inning. Rodgers hit a double to score
Samaria Jackson, who reached first base on a walk and advanced to second base on a passed ball.
NCCU pulled within 4-3 in the third inning. Davis smacked a two-RBI single that scored
Makiya Graves and
Tyler Suttles, who led off the inning with a single. Graves reached base on a walk.
The Pirates led 6-3 after scoring one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. ECU added three runs in the sixth inning for the final score.
Daiyah Bailey recorded a hit and a stolen base for the Eagles, who tallied six hits. ECU finished with 11 hits and capitalized on three NCCU errors. Kanisha Anderson and Trinity Nichols each had two RBIs for the Pirates.Â
NCCU is back on the diamond this weekend in a three-game series against Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. The first game is Friday at 5 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
