Eagles Rout Delaware State 82-47 On The Road; Callahan Reaches 1,000 Career Points

DOVER, Md. - Aysia Hinton scored 14 points and Jada Tiggett added 13 points off the bench as North Carolina Central rolled over Delaware State 82-47 in a MEAC women's basketball game at Memorial Hall on Monday.  

The Eagles improved to 5-5 in the MEAC and 8-17 overall with the victory. They remained in the upper half of the MEAC standings (fourth) as the regular season winds down. Four games are left before the MEAC Tournament, which will be held March 12-15 in Norfolk, Va. Delaware State fell to 1-10 in MEAC play and 5-20 overall. 

The 35-point win equals the largest margin of victory this season for the Eagles. It happened on a night when Morgan Callahan surpassed the 1,000-point career plateau. She reached the milestone on her final basket approximately three minutes into the fourth period. Callahan, who has over 600 career rebounds, finished with 10 points.  

Hinton and Tiggett led five Eagles in double figures. Shakiria Foster added 12 points and Tierney Coleman tallied 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists off the bench. Tiggett and Coleman combined for 24 of the Eagles' 39 bench points. 

NCCU was dominant on both ends of the floor for its second straight victory. The Eagles shot 50 percent, including 45 percent (9 of 20) from three-point range, while holding Delaware State to 28.1 percent shooting. The Hornets were 1 of 10 behind the three-point arc. 

Tiggett (6) and Callahan (4) combined for 10 of the Eagles' 13 blocked shots, a season high. Coleman collected three of NCCU's 11 steals.  

The Eagles took control from the start, leading 10-1 in the opening minutes. By halftime, the score was 34-21 in the Eagles' favor.  

NCCU outscored the Hornets 19-5 in the third period to put the game out of reach. The score was 53-26 entering the fourth period. 

Laila Lewis added 7 points and 3 rebounds in seven minutes for the Eagles, who swept the season series. NCCU defeated Delaware State for the third time in a row and 8 of the last 9 games. 

Kiarra MceIrath scored 14 points and Najah Lane added 12 for the Hornets.  

The Eagles will look to extend their streak on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at Maryland Eastern Shore. ESPN+ will livestream the MEAC contest, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
